About the Masjid
Nakhoda Masjid, the largest mosque in Kolkata, is a significant religious and cultural landmark. Built in 1926 by the Kutchi Memon Jamat, a Sunni Muslim community from Gujarat, it stands tall in the bustling commercial hub of Chitpur, Burrabazar. Inspired by Mughal architecture, the mosque is known for its grand domes, towering minarets, and intricate Islamic designs. Serving as a major place of worship, it attracts thousands of devotees, especially during Ramadan and Eid.
Description:
The mosque's imposing gateway, which remarkably resembles the Buland Darwaza, leads into a vast courtyard capable of accommodating thousands of worshippers. The main prayer hall has a capacity for 10,000 devotees. The mosque is characterized by its three domes and two towering minarets, each reaching a height of 46 meters (151 ft). Adding to its grandeur are 25 smaller minarets ranging from 30 to 36 meters (100 to 117 ft) high. Constructed with high-quality granite stone brought from Tolepur, the architecture showcases exquisite ornamentation and artistic detail throughout.
