Sidi Saiyyed Mosque – Ahmedabad, Gujarat

About the Mosque

Sidi Saiyyed Mosque, also known as Sidi Saiyyed ni Jali, is an iconic architectural landmark in Ahmedabad, Gujarat. Built in 1572-73 AD by Sidi Saiyyed, an Abyssinian in the army of the last Sultan of Gujarat, it is world-famous for its intricate stone latticework (jalis), especially the ‘Tree of Life’ motif on the western wall. This motif has inspired the logo of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad (IIM-A) and is a masterpiece of Indo-Islamic architecture.

Description and Specialty:

The mosque is famous for its ten exquisitely carved stone latticework windows on the side and rear arches. The rear wall features square stone panels with geometrical designs. The two bays flanking the central aisle contain reticulated stone slabs carved with designs of intertwined trees, foliage, and a palm motif. This intricate lattice stone window, particularly the "tree of life" carving, has become an unofficial symbol of Ahmedabad and even inspired the logo of the Indian Institute of Management Ahmedabad.
