Undavalli Caves tours Andhra Pradesh

About Undavalli Caves

The Undavalli Caves, located near Vijayawada in Andhra Pradesh, are a testament to India's rich cultural and architectural heritage. These caves were carved out of solid sandstone on a hillside during the 4th to 5th centuries CE and exhibit a fusion of Jain, Buddhist, and Hindu influences. Originally serving as a Jain abode, they were later adapted by Buddhist monks and eventually transformed into Hindu temples.

The most remarkable feature of these caves is the four-story rock-cut structure, which houses a 5-meter-long reclining statue of Lord Vishnu, sculpted from a single granite block. The caves also display intricate carvings, monastic cells, and early Gupta architectural elements.
