Apply for a Learner’s License (LL)

Before getting a permanent driving license, you must obtain a Learner’s License.

Eligibility for Learner’s License:

For Non-Transport Vehicles (Private Vehicles)

Minimum age: 18 years

Must be aware of traffic rules and regulations

Must pass a learner’s test

For Transport Vehicles (Commercial Vehicles)

Minimum age: 20 years

Must have held a Light Motor Vehicle (LMV) license for at least 1 year

Must be trained at a government-approved driving school

For Gearless Two-Wheelers (up to 50cc)

Minimum age: 16 years

Must have parental or guardian consent

Types of Driving Licenses

Renewal & Duplicate License

A DL is valid for 20 years or until the age of 40, after which it must be renewed every 10 years (5 years for commercial vehicles).

In case of loss/damage, a duplicate DL can be obtained from the RTO with an FIR copy and required documents.

International Driving Permit (IDP)

Needed to legally drive in foreign countries.

Requires a valid Indian DL, passport, and visa.

Penalties for Driving Without a License

Fine of up to ₹5000 under the New Motor Vehicle Act, 2019.

Higher penalties for underage driving and commercial vehicle violations.
