The temple is believed to date back to the Gupta period (6th–9th century AD), showcasing exquisite stone architecture with intricate carvings. The central deity is Goddess Mahishasurmardini (a fierce form of Durga), depicted slaying the demon Mahishasura. It also includes a Shiva temple nearby, forming a unique confluence of Shaivism and Shaktism.
