Preparation Steps
Wash and cook the dal
Rinse the toor dal 2–3 times.
In a pressure cooker, add the dal, 2 cups water, turmeric powder, and cook for 3–4 whistles until soft.
Mash the dal lightly and set aside.
Prepare the tempering (tadka)
Heat oil or ghee in a pan.
Add mustard seeds and let them splutter.
Add cumin seeds, curry leaves, and green chilies. Sauté for a few seconds.
Cook the masala
Add chopped onions and fry until light golden.
Add ginger-garlic paste and sauté until the raw smell disappears.
Add chopped tomatoes, red chili powder, coriander powder, and salt. Cook until tomatoes are soft.
Combine dal with masala
Pour the cooked dal into the masala.
Add water as needed to adjust the consistency.
Simmer for 5–7 minutes on low heat.
Finish and serve
Garnish with fresh coriander leaves.
Serve hot with rice or roti.
