Built by Kochengat Chola during the early Chola dynasty (around 2nd century CE), this temple features classic Dravidian architecture. It has five concentric enclosures (prakaram) and towering gopurams. The inner sanctum always has water beneath the Shiva Linga, representing the element "Water" among the five elements.
