The temple, built in 1788 by Sardar Rangarao Odhekar, is made entirely of black stone, hence the name "Kalaram" (Kala = Black, Ram = Lord Rama). The idols of Lord Rama, Sita, and Lakshmana are also carved in black stone. The temple features a tall spire and is surrounded by walled enclosures with 96 pillars in the assembly hall.
