The temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva in the form of Rajarajeshwara (King of Kings). It is an ancient temple believed to be more than 1000 years old and constructed in classical Kerala style with intricate wooden carvings and a copper-plated roof. The temple has a unique architecture with a tall, imposing sanctum (srikovil) and no flagstaff, which is rare in Kerala temples. Women are allowed to enter the sanctum only after 8 PM.
