Driver distraction means that while driving, the driver’s full attention is not on the road and moves to something else. Driving is a very serious task. The eyes must be on the road, the ears must hear the surrounding sounds, and the brain must focus on controlling the vehicle. The moment even one of these is not focused on the road, the chance of an accident becomes very high. Many people think driver distraction only means using a mobile phone. But in reality, it happens in many other ways as well.
Using a mobile phone while driving is extremely dangerous. When a driver is talking on a call or checking a message, the eyes are not on the road, the hands are not fully on the steering wheel, and most importantly, the brain is focused on the call or message instead of driving. Whether it is hand-held or hands-free, there is no difference. Even in hands-free mode, the driver’s mind is on the conversation and not on the road. In the few seconds spent looking at the phone, if a child comes onto the road, an accident cannot be avoided. That is why no call and no message is more important than a life.
Driving while wearing headphones is also a hidden danger. Headphones make music sound clear, but important road sounds cannot be heard. Horns cannot be heard, ambulance or police sirens cannot be heard, and the sound of vehicles coming from behind may not be noticed. As a result, the driver reacts late. In emergency situations, even a one-second delay can turn into a major accident. While driving, the ears must be fully focused on the road.
Satellite navigation, or sat nav, is very useful in places where the route is not known. If the route is set before starting the drive, the driver does not get confused. But changing routes while driving by looking at the screen, or holding the mobile phone and watching navigation, is very dangerous. Then the driver’s attention shifts completely to the screen. Vehicles, people, and signals on the road may all be missed. Sat nav should help driving, but it should not become an obstacle to driving.
Infotainment systems in today’s vehicles are also a major cause of driver distraction. Large touch screens, music, calls, navigation, and settings are all available on one screen. These are useful, but if used too much while driving, they become dangerous. To look at the screen, the eyes are not on the road. To touch it, the hands are not on the steering wheel. In this way, even small actions completely distract the driver. Many accidents happen because of this kind of distraction inside the vehicle.
Driver distraction is not only caused by external things. Personal problems in the driver’s mind are also a major distraction. Family problems, household conflicts, financial difficulties, debts, job pressure, career problems, failures, fear, tension, and stress do not allow the driver’s mind to stay on the road. Even if the driver’s eyes are on the road, the brain keeps thinking about problems. Then hazards are noticed late, braking happens late, and wrong decisions are made. This mental distraction is very dangerous because it cannot be seen from the outside.
When a driver is distracted, it is not only the driver who is at risk. Children walking on the road, children going to school, elderly people crossing the road, cyclists, bike riders, and other drivers are all at risk. If the driver’s attention slips even for a moment, another person’s life may be put in danger. That is why driving carries a very big responsibility.
While driving, some simple rules must be remembered. Mobile phones should not be used. Headphones should not be worn. Sat nav should be set in advance. Unnecessary tasks on screens should not be done. Most importantly, while driving, the mind should also be kept calm. Driving always means full attention must be on the road.
Finally, one very important thing. One second of distraction can turn into a lifetime of suffering. Driving is not just operating a vehicle; it is a responsibility. Not only our safety, but the safety of every person on the road is in our hands.
