The Dilwara Jain Temples, located approximately 2.5 kilometers from Mount Abu in Rajasthan, India, are renowned for their exquisite marble architecture and intricate carvings. Constructed between the 11th and 13th centuries by the Chalukya dynasty, these temples are considered masterpieces of Indian architecture. Temple Description and Speciality
The temple complex comprises five distinct temples, each dedicated to a different Jain Tirthankara:
Vimal Vasahi Temple – Dedicated to Lord Rishabhanatha, the first Tirthankara, this temple was built in 1031 AD by Vimal Shah, a minister of the Solanki dynasty. It features a central shrine surrounded by a hall adorned with intricately carved pillars and ceilings.
Luna Vasahi Temple – Constructed in 1230 AD by brothers Tejpal and Vastupal, ministers of the Vaghela dynasty, this temple honors Lord Neminatha, the 22nd Tirthankara. It is famed for its detailed marble work, especially the ornate carvings on its ceilings and doorways.
Pittalhar Temple – Built by Bhima Shah, a minister from the Gujarat dynasty, this temple is dedicated to Lord Rishabhanatha. It houses a massive metal statue of the deity, primarily made of brass, which gives the temple its name.
Parshvanatha Temple – Dedicated to Lord Parshvanatha, the 23rd Tirthankara, this three-story temple was constructed in 1458–59 AD by Sangvi Mandlik and his family. It boasts intricate carvings and a sanctum with four big mandapas housing a Chaumukha idol of Parshvanatha.
Mahavir Swami Temple – The smallest of the five, this temple is dedicated to Lord Mahavira, the 24th Tirthankara. Built in 1582 AD, it features detailed carvings of flowers, animals, and other scenes on its walls.
The Dilwara Temples are celebrated for their opulent yet understated entranceways, reflecting Jain values of honesty and frugality. The ornamental details spread over the minutely carved ceilings, doorways, pillars, and panels are considered remarkable.
