About Moodabidri
Shri Bhagwan Mahaveer Jain Temple, located in Moodabidri, Karnataka, is a revered pilgrimage site for Jains. Also known as the Thousand Pillar Temple or Savira Kambada Basadi, this magnificent temple is an architectural masterpiece built in the 15th century. Dedicated to Bhagwan Mahaveer, the 24th Tirthankara, it stands as a symbol of Jain heritage, spiritual significance, and intricate craftsmanship.
Description:Constructed primarily in the 15th century, the Saavira Kambanda Basidia is a sprawling stone structure that took an impressive 31 years to complete. The temple complex is characterized by its imposing gopuram (entrance tower), intricate carvings, and multiple mandapas (halls). The main deity enshrined in the temple is an 8-foot tall bronze idol of Chandra Prabha, the eighth Jain Tirthankara, in a standing posture. The temple's design incorporates elements resembling temples found in Nepal and Kashmir, particularly in its sloping roofs. The interior is a visual spectacle with elaborately decorated columns and doors flanked by guardian deities. The temple complex also includes smaller shrines and a significant Mahasabha (pillar of honor) in front of the entrance.
Specialty:
The most striking and unique feature of this temple, which gives it its popular name, is the presence of an astounding thousand intricately carved pillars, and remarkably, it is said that no two pillars are identical. These pillars are adorned with exquisite sculptures depicting various themes, including deities, animals (like dragons and giraffes, reflecting ancient trade influences), and scenes from Jain mythology. This incredible architectural feat showcases the exceptional skill and artistry of the craftsmen of the Vijayanagar period. The temple is not just a place of worship but also a repository of art and history, reflecting the rich cultural heritage of Jainism in the region. Moudaber itself is often referred to as the "Jain Kashi of the South" due to its numerous Jain basalis, with the Saavira Kambada Basadi being the most prominent and celebrated among them.
