DOs – What You Should Do
Respect Local Customs & Religion
Maldives is a 100% Muslim country. Islamic customs are strictly followed, especially on local (non-resort) islands.
Greet people respectfully with a nod or say “Assalaamu Alaikum”.
Always show politeness and patience, especially during Ramadan.
Dress Modestly (on Local Islands)
Women: Cover shoulders, arms, and knees.
Men: Avoid being shirtless outside of beach/resort areas.
Swimwear is allowed only in resorts or designated "bikini beaches".
Be Culturally Aware
Avoid eating, drinking, or smoking in public during Ramadan daylight hours.
Don’t display non-Muslim religious symbols openly.
Ask for permission before taking photos of people or religious sites.
Manage Currency and Payments Smartly
USD is widely accepted in resorts; use Maldivian Rufiyaa (MVR) on local islands.
Tipping is appreciated: ~$1–2/day for housekeeping, ~$5–10 for excellent service.
Stay Connected
Buy a local SIM card (e.g., Dhiraagu or Ooredoo) at the airport.
Resorts often offer free Wi-Fi.
Travel Prepared
Keep both digital and printed copies of your passport, bookings, insurance, and return flight tickets.
Indian citizens receive a free 30-day visa on arrival, but must show accommodation proof and sufficient funds.
Plan Transfers in Advance
Confirm speedboat or seaplane transfers from Malé ahead of time.
Some transfers operate only during certain hours and may cost extra.
Inform Your Bank
Notify your bank about travel to avoid issues with international transactions.
Use cards at resorts, but carry some cash for local use.
DON'Ts – What You Should Avoid
Don’t Bring Alcohol or Pork
Importing alcohol or pork is illegal. Alcohol is only available at licensed resorts and liveaboard boats.
Avoid Public Display of Affection (PDA)
Holding hands, kissing, or hugging in public is considered disrespectful and is frowned upon.
No Drugs, No Exceptions
Maldives has a zero-tolerance policy on drugs. Even small amounts can lead to imprisonment.
Don’t Disrespect Religion or Culture
Criticizing Islam, or engaging in religious proselytism, is a criminal offense.
Avoid political discussions about Maldives in public or online.
No Nudity or Topless Sunbathing
Nudity is strictly prohibited, even on private beaches.
Don’t Collect Coral or Shells
Taking shells or corals is illegal and environmentally harmful.
Don’t Use Drones Without Permission
Drone use is restricted, especially near resorts. You need official approval to fly one.
Don’t Sleep or Camp Outdoors
Camping or sleeping on beaches without permission is not allowed.
Differences Between Resort & Local Islands
The Maldives offers a unique mix of luxury, natural beauty, and cultural authenticity. As an Indian traveler, your experience will be incredibly rewarding if you are informed and culturally respectful. While resorts provide a carefree holiday setting, visiting local islands is equally enriching as long as you adapt to their customs.
