Jeera Rice (Cumin Rice) - Preparation Details

Jeera Rice, also known as Cumin Rice, is a simple yet flavorful North Indian dish made by cooking basmati rice with cumin seeds and mild whole spices. It is light, aromatic, and pairs perfectly with curries, dals, or even a simple yogurt side. This dish is a favorite in restaurants and homes alike for its subtle taste and quick preparation.

Preparation Steps

Wash and soak rice

Wash the basmati rice thoroughly in water until it runs clear.

Soak for about 20–30 minutes, then drain the water completely.

Heat ghee/oil

In a deep pan or pot, heat ghee (or oil) on medium flame.

Add whole spices

Add cumin seeds (jeera) and let them crackle.

Then add bay leaf, cloves, cardamom, and cinnamon stick. Fry for a few seconds until aromatic.

Add rice

Add the soaked and drained rice to the pan.

Gently stir for 1–2 minutes so the rice gets coated with the ghee and spices.

Add water and salt

Pour in 2 cups of water.

Add salt to taste and stir gently.

Cook the rice

Bring to a boil, then reduce the flame to low.

Cover with a lid and cook for about 10–12 minutes, or until the rice is fully cooked and water is absorbed.

Rest and fluff

Turn off the heat and let it rest covered for 5 minutes.

Fluff the rice gently with a fork.

Garnish and serve

Garnish with chopped fresh coriander (optional).

Serve hot with curry, dal, or raita.
